FAQs
What is OFF BEAT?
OFF BEAT is a workshop for rhythm and mind; an 3-week introductory drumming course which focusses on the use of percussion to help combat anxiety - all while developing your epic drum skills!
Where is it happening and how do I get there?
OFF BEAT is currently being run at Lordship Hub, Higham Rd, London N17 6NU.
Do I need experience?
No! Whether you have never held a pair of sticks before, or if you’ve had some time away from the kit and need to get back some of the basics - OFF BEAT is definitely a safe space for those venturing into the world of drumming!
How does it work? How is a session run?
Each of the 3 sessions will be working upon a different theme every week. For example, your first week will look something like this!
Week 1 - Balance
Keyword: Balance! Recognising which is your ‘lead’ or dominant side and which side will ‘follow’. Which is the more dominant side of your body in general and why is it important to have a balanced approach to rhythm?
Learn how to hold the sticks evenly with both hands and be relaxed and comfortable. Experiment with hits with both hands. How will we stand/sit at the pad? How to make the sticks feel weightless.
Begin exercises such as single strokes, double strokes, paradiddles etc. Try leading with both your L (Lead) and F (Follow) hand.
Develop these patterns so that both your hands can feel comfortable with Leading and Following.
Relating the movement of the sticks to breathing and staying relaxed. Trying to bring your mind back to focus if it wanders!
What if I need to miss a session?
No worries! We’ll catch you up with what was learned so that you’re fully prepared for the following class :)
Will I need equipment?
If you have your own sticks and a practice pad, great - bring those along! If not, we will provide everything you need - just let us know when signing up.

Hands must be sanitised upon entry.
All borrowed gear will be sanitised both at the start of class and at the end.
